Zimbabwean authorities have banned public gatherings as a measure of controlling the spread of cholera.
The disease has already killed 21 people in the capital Harare, prompting the government to declare an emergency. More than 2000 people have been infected.
In a statement, the national police spokesperson Charity Charamba urged members of the public to adhere to the ban as it would help in containing the spread of cholera. She however did not say how long the ban would last.
The southern African country’s main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, had planned a rally on Saturday, where, according to his spokesperson, he would take a mock presidential oath.
Zimbabwe suffered its worst cholera outbreak in 2018 at the height of an economic crisis, when more than 4,000 people died and another 40,000 were treated after being infected.
According to Health Minister Obadiah Moyo, the latest cholera outbreak occured after burst sewers in Budiriro and Glenview suburbs contaminated water in boreholes and open wells, which are used by residents.
