Zamalek defeats Al Ahly on penalties to win Egyptian Super Cup
Zamalek defeated defending champions Al Ahly 4-3 on penalties at the Mohamed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on Thursday night to win the Egyptian Super Cup.
This was Zamalek’s fourth Super Cup win and first victory against Al Ahly, who created more chances during the match, in five attempts.
The game went straight to penalties after the game ended goalless following 90 minutes of action; there was no extra time to decide a winner.
Al Ahly converted its first three penalties while Achraf Bencharki, the hero in last week’s CAF Super Cup, missed Zamalek’s third to give Al Ahly a 3-2 advantage.
However, Mohamed Hany and Aliou Badji missed Al Ahly’s next two spot-kicks while Tarek Hamed and, finally, Abdallah Gomaa successfully converted their penalties to hand Zamalek the win.
This is Zamalek’s second trophy in a week after they defeated Tunisian side Espérance 3-1 in Qatar to win the CAF Super Cup for the fourth time.
Al Ahly forward Kahraba was sent off for his reaction to celebrations by Zamalek players Shikabala and Gomaa and will be suspended for Al Ahly’s next match.
The two sides next face each other in the Egyptian Premier League at the Cairo International Stadium on Monday. Al Ahly, who have won all their 15 matches, leads the table while Zamalek are third, 14 points behind them.
