Egyptian club Zamalek claimed the CAF Super Cup after defeating bitter rivals Al Ahly at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.

Zamalek won a dramatic penalty shootout 4-3 after the game had ended 1-1 in normal time.

This was the second meeting between the two sides in the CAF Super cup. Zamalek triumphed 1-0 in the first match in 1994 in Johannesburg.

Wessam Abou Ali converted a penalty just before halftime to give Al Ahly the lead before Zamalek levelled through substitute Naser Mansy with just over 10 minutes of the match left to play.

With neither side able to find a winner, the match went to penalties.

Zamalek scored all four of their spot-kicks and did not require a fifth as Al Ahly missed three of their five attempts through Yahia Attiyat Allah and Abou Ali.

It is Zamalek’s fifth Super Cup victory and first since 2020. Al Ahly remains the most successful side with eight titles.
