Yet another radio station shut down in Gambia
A fourth radio station in Gambia was shut down late on Sunday by authorities, media sources said.
According to six plain clothes security agents who arrived at Paradise FM slightly before 23:00 GMT, the order to stop broadcasting was from the ministry of information, sources said.
They however did not provide any official documents or give a reason for the closure.
Several hours prior, the station had spoken at length to an opposition spokesperson, Halifa Sallah, as well as to a ruling party spokesperson, Yankuba Colley.
The tiny West African nation has been thrown into a political turmoil after the country’s long-serving President Yahya Jammeh lost December presidential election.
Jammeh rejected the results saying he would not cede power to opponent Adama Barrow and filing a court challenge in a case that will be heard on January 10.
Three other radio stations have been ordered off air in similar circumstances so far in January, with only one of them – Afri Radio – later allowed to continue broadcasts on the condition it plays only music.
