The world’s largest uncut diamond failed to sell at the London auction held last night after bidders failed to reach the minimum reserve price set for it.
It had been expected to sell for more than $70m, but the highest bidder could only manage $61m.
The diamond, named Lesedi la Rona, is almost the size of a tennis ball, and was unearthed in Botswana in November 2015.
The rough diamond is believed to be more than 2.5 billion years old, and is 1,109 carats.
The auction at Sotheby’s was the first time a rough diamond of such a size has gone on public sale.
