Voters in South Korea head to the polls to choose new president
People in South Korea are flooding to voting stations to choose a new president.
Polls will close at 8 PM local time, and the winner is set to be announced before midnight on Tuesday. There are 13 candidates to pick from. Moon Jae-in — the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination — has already cast his vote. The latest opinion poll indicates he’s projected to win. Moon has pledged to improve ties with the DPRK, re-examine the deployment of the U.S. missile defense system THAAD, and push through sweeping economic reforms. His main rivals are Ahn Cheol-soo — a centrist who has shown a more conservative stance towards Pyongyang — and Hong Joon-pyo, a member of former President Park Guen-hye’s party.
The election will end months of uncertainty and ups-and-downs after Park was indicted for corruption.
