Voter registration to resume in troubled Kasai region

Election officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo say they are ready to resume voter registration exercises in the troubled Kasai region.

According to the head of the the DRC’s election commission, Corneille Nangaa, improved security in the region has helped accelerate preparation for the delayed elections. Although local authorities there claim that recent incidents of violence have ebbed out, tensions persist and over 1.4 million residents who fled the violence in Kasai are yet to return.

Over 3,000 people have been killed in clashes since August.

The commission says its has has so far registered 37 million voters across the country but remains non committal on when it will announce election dates.
