A volcano on the French island of Reunion began to erupt on Saturday morning, shooting fumes and lava into the air.

It was the third time the Piton de la Fournaise, or “Peak of the Furnace”, has erupted this year. It is a shield volcano on the eastern side of the island.

The government of the island, officially a part of France lying to the east of Madagascar has imposed a ban on access to the volcano including by helicopter
