South African rugby side the Vodacom Bulls announced yet another acquisition as the Pretoria-based side continues strengthening its squad during the lull in activity occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Springbok utility back Gio Aplon joined the three-time Super Rugby champions from Japanese Top League outfit Toyota Verblitz, where he previously played under current Bulls director of rugby, Jake White.
The Bulls said that Aplon will join the team from June or as soon as he is able to travel back to South Africa, due to restrictions on travel, but did not specify the duration of his contract.
Aplon has previously played for Western Province and the DHL Stormers for nine years before moving on to France where he played for French Top 14 side Grenoble for another three years.
A statement on the Bulls’ website praised Aplon’s explosive speed and nimble feet which allowed him to establish himself as a proven try scorer and personifying the phrase ‘size doesn’t matter’.
“There is no doubt that his experience and amazing skillset will not only benefit the team but also assist in the further development of the exciting younger outside backs.”
Aplon, 37, noted that the Bulls had always been a formidable force in the sport and he looked forward to doing his part and making the club and fans alike proud.
“I have always had a great deal of respect for the brand and what it has achieved, and I am truly looking forward to running out at Loftus. Coach Jake has an amazing vision and plan for the team, and I am just honoured that he wants me as part of it.”
