Olympic and World champion Usain Bolt ran his fastest 100 metres of the year on the first day of the London’s Anniversary Games, Friday.

Bolt was making a return from a six week absence on the track due to a pelvic injury on a rainy night in London.

Despite a sluggish start in the final, the world record holder claimed victory in 9.87seconds to set a new season’s best.

Bolt had run just four times this season before Friday night, but he dismissed all concerns about his fitness, improving his standing as the 62nd fastest man in the world this year at the start of the night to sixth by the end of it.

He promised there was more to come. ‘I just need to work a bit more and then I should be OK to defend my World Championships title,’ said the 29-year-old.

Bolt has suffered from some injury all season while Justin Gatlin, who is unbeaten in 23 races, has been supreme.

There was a convincing win for Britain’s World and Olympic champion Mo Farah, over 3,000 metres.

It was Farah’s first race in Britain since his coach Alberto Salazar was implicated in doping allegations.

On a night where the weather caused the postponement of the men’s pole vault, there was a big shock in the men’s high jump where favourite Mutaz Essa Basrhim on Qatar was beaten into third.

The event was won by Italy’s Marco Fassinotti, who cleared 2.31 metres.
