At least three people were killed and seven others were injured in an explosion at a restaurant in Boondhere District in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, a government official confirmed.
Ismail Mukhtar, a spokesman for the Ministry of Information, said the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was detonated by a suicide bomber outside the Blue Sky Restaurant close to a security checkpoint.
“Three people were killed and seven others injured in suicide bombing outside Blue Sky Restaurant,” Mukhtar said.
The restaurant is located in the vicinity where the Presidential Palace and Prime Minister’s Office are situated.
The area was sealed off by the police, according to an officer, Ahmed Aden, and ambulances could be heard making their way to the scene.
This is the latest attack to hit the capital in weeks. Last month, militants set off a car bomb near a beachside hotel in an attack which killed at least five people and injured at least 10 others.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet. Al-Shabaab, the Islamist group which operates in Somalia, however, has frequently carried out such attacks in the past.
