UN’s Ban Ki-moon Condemns Lake Chad Attacks
The United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the triple suicide bombing on an island in Lake Chad, blamed on Islamist extremists Boko Haram.
The attacks killed at least 24 people and left scores others wounded.
“The secretary-general condemns the triple suicide attack on the island of Koulfoua on the Chadian side of Lake Chad on December 5 2015,” read a statement released by Ban’s office.
“These despicable acts demonstrate yet again the brutality of Boko Haram,” the statement added, offering condolences to the families of those killed and injured.
Boko Haram has stepped up its terrorist activities in West Africa, now commonly using suicide bombing especially in the lake region that lies close to the border with Nigeria.
On November 9 Chad declared a state of emergency in the flashpoint lake region, which straddles Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger.
