John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s former president, is poised to return to power after unofficial results placed him ahead of fellow presidential contestants in the December 7 elections.

Local Joy News reported on Sunday that Mahama had opened a lead over his rivals that ensured his victory.

Mahamudu Bawumia, the current vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), confirmed Mahama’s victory in a concession speech, stressing the need to maintain peace and unity.

“The people of Ghana have voted for change and I respect that will of the Ghanaian people. I am making this concession speech to avoid the tension in this country,” said Bawumia.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is still expected to declare the official results formally on Tuesday.
