An unknown number of Kenyan police officers were killed on Saturday after the vehicle they were traveling in ran over an improvised explosive device along the Damajale Harehare road in Garissa near the Kenya-Somalia border.

A statement by the National Police Service said that the attack occurred at around 5.30pm local time.

“Unfortunately, we lost some of our officers and the vehicle they were traveling on was severely damaged,” the statement, attributed to the Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, said.

The statement added that reinforcements had been deployed to pursue the attackers and an investigation into the incident had been launched.
