The United Nations children’s agency has said emergency supplies are already arriving into Malawi to assist those affected by the tropical cyclone.
Cyclone Idai hit the south-west region of Africa last week, leaving massive destruction in its trail.
Hundreds of people are feared dead, with Mozambique alone reporting possible deaths of at least 1,000 people.
UNICEF said it was working together with the Malawi government to provide humanitarian supplies to those affected.
“After a disaster like the recent floods, UNICEF’s priority is to help children and families who have lost their homes and are living in evacuation centres or with other families in their communities,” UNICEF Malawi Representative Johannes Wedenig said.
“We have emergency supplies pre-positioned in areas of Malawi that are regularly affected by natural disasters, which has allowed us to move quickly to meet people’s immediate needs.”
The supplies include medical provisions, educational supplies, water and sanitation supplies among others.
UNICEF also said it was training volunteers to help in assessing the situation in the affected countries.
