The UN has alleged that the South Sudan government suffocated more than fifty civilians suspected of supporting the opposition in the town of Leer in Unity State.
The UN Human Rights report further alleges that both sides in the conflict targeted civilians, raping women and girls and killing civilians during the civil war which began in 2013 in the world’s youngest nation. South Sudan’s government has denied the allegations.
