The United Nations (UN) is keen for the success of the upcoming UN-sponsored Libyan national conference, a UN official stressed on Tuesday.

Stephanie Williams, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for political affairs in Libya, made the remarks when meeting with officials of several cities of western Libya.

She spoke about the UN Action Plan, particularly the conference’s agenda, desired outcomes and guarantees for the implementation of these outcomes during the meeting.

“Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Williams emphasized that the national conference is a Libyan-Libyan event aimed at agreeing on a National Charter based on principles shared by the Libyan people, a roadmap to end the political impasse and the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections,” the UN Support Mission in Libya tweeted on Tuesday.

UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame last year proposed an action plan to end the Libyan political crisis that includes the national conference.

Last week, Salame said that the conference will be held on April 14-16 in the southwestern Libyan city of Ghadames.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and chaos ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011.

Despite signing a UN-sponsored political agreement later in 2015, the North African nation has been struggling to make a democratic transition.
