The United Nations has condemned attacks on aid workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid an increase in such incidents in the second half of the year.

On Tuesday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the country said 254 security incidents in which aid workers were attacked were recorded between March and August this year.

These attacks have resulted in the deaths of five aid workers, with 26 others injured and six kidnapped.

In July, the UN had recorded at least 170 security incidents, resulting in four deaths and 20 injuries since the beginning of the year.

In a statement, the head of the MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, also called on all actors to “join forces to provide an effective response to the protection needs of humanitarian workers.”
