The Head of the UN mission in South Sudan said he is worried that inter-communal clashes in South Sudan are occurring in areas that have been “relatively calm for months” and that the incidents are raising tensions and increase the risk of sparking even more violence.
Speaking to reporters in New York, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric reported on behalf of peacekeeping officials in South Sudan that clashes between communities and others fighting over the weekend has led to civilians being killed and displaced in the centre and north of the country.
He added that Shearer said the shortage of food and access to basic services “has put huge pressure on communities with recent flooding having destroyed crops and pastures.”
The spokesperson said the UN mission is “working with both local and national authorities to try to resolve disputes and will continue to support reconciliation and peace building efforts.”
