
UN Chief appoints new commander for the peacekeeping force in South Sudan

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gueterres, has appointed Lieutenant General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi of Rwanda as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Radio Tamazuj reports.
The Rwandan army officer replaces the Kenya Lt-Gen Johnson Ondieki who was sacked last year November.
Born in 1964, Lt. Gen Kamanzi has served as Rwanda’s army chief and the force commander of the UN mission in Sudan’s Darfur region (UNAMID) during his 28 years of military service.
The new Rwandan Force Commander has a Master’s in National Security strategy from the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. and hold a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Makerere University in Kampala. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, Nigeria, and the Army Command College in Nanjing, China according to the UN.
