A Congolese asylum seeker who was due to be deported from the UK in December has been released from detention following a petition to stop him from being sent back to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to Otis Bolamu, he fled the country for fear of his life, after he was labelled a spy for an opposition political party.
Having settled in Swansea, the 38-year-old was picked by immigration officers from his home on December 19, and told he would remain in detention until his deportation date.
Bolamu was freed on Thursday, coinciding with the announcement that Felix Tshisekedi had won the DR Congo presidential election.
The country, dogged by political and ethnic clashes for years, held the vote on December 30.
The result is however being contested by Martin Fayulu, who came second after Tshisekedi, but alleges fraud.
Should everything move smoothly, the DR Congo will witness its first ever peaceful transition of power since independence.
