UK Foreign Secretary sparks anger over Libya remarks

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson

The UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson appeared to evade journalist’s questions as he arrived at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester.

This came after he made a gaffe on Tuesday at a Conservative conference fringe meeting.

Boris said the Libyan city of Sirte could be the new Dubai, but “all they have to do is clear the dead bodies away.”

The UK’s Labour Party has labelled the comments crass, callous, and cruel, with members of the Conservative party calling for him to be sacked.

Johnson has responded, saying he was referring to the clearing of booby trapped bodies of ISIL fighters.

Libya has been in chaos since the 2011 ouster and killing of long-serving leader Muammar Gaddafi.

His death created a vacuum that was then exploited by various rebel groups that fought to take control of the North African country.

Currently, there are two governments operating in the country, one in the east and the other in the west.

The United Nations last week launched a new push to have the stakeholders engage in dialogue to pacify the country and to pave way for a presidential election.
