The United Kingdom is among global powers exerting pressure on South Sudan’s warring parties to implement a peace agreement. The UK Minister for Africa, who is on a visit to South Sudan, is urging leaders there to form a transitional national unity government.
South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, is still at war. The opposing powers failed meet a deadline for the formation of a unity government in January.
The two opposing parties cannot agree to form a unity government before a constitution review. The government says the process of reviewing the constitution would further delay the peace implementation process and is calling on the opposition to agree to form a unity government without it. A position rejected by the opposition group led by Riek Machar.
The UK, along with other Troika countries, the United States and Norway, has been funding the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) throughout the peace mediation process, which resulted to a signing of the peace deal in August 2015.
