A military general in Uganda has been charged in a court-martial and remanded in custody for taking part in partisan politics, contrary to the army’s code of conduct; absence without leave and insubordination.

General David Sejusa has been an outspoken critic of Uganda’s long serving President Yoweri Museveni.

Gen. Sejusa however refused to plead to all charges.

The former spy chief was arrested by military police on Sunday at his home in Naguru, a Kampala suburb.

He is being held in a maximum prison facility until he returns to court next week. The matter of whether he is still a serving officer however remains a major aspect of his trial.

Sejjusa’s defense lawyer, Ladislas Rwakafuzi says his client is being unlawfully charged for contravening the army code of conduct.

A case before the country’s high court is yet to determine whether Sejusa is still an army officer or not.
