Uganda’s Kizza Besigye wants his trial for treason to continue
Uganda’s main opposition leader Kizza Besigye has said he hopes the state puts him on trial for treason following his May arrest, as that would give him a platform to challenge the February presidential election result.
Besigye came second in the February 18 vote, but claimed that the poll was rigged by winner President Yoweri Museveni.
Besigye was arrested after a video went viral on social media, showing him taking a mock oath of office for the presidency.
He was charged with treason and detained until July 12 when he was released on bail.
“I want the court (case) to come up and we argue who won and who should have been sworn in,” he said after speaking at an event at Chatham House, a think tank in London.
Independent monitors said the election was marred by multiple flaws including a lack of transparency and integrity by the elections body.
