Uganda’s expectant women to benefit from free delivery kits
Uganda is helping to save the lives of millions of expectant mothers during childbirth by providing supplies needed for a cleaner and safer birth.
Over 60% of women in rural Uganda give birth to their babies at home, where there are no proper health services.
Expectant women in the East African country will now get some reprieve as they will get life saving kits, dubbed the ‘Mama kit”.
The kits contain clean and sterile supplies to use during child-birth.
The life-saving package is now a formal requirement for pregnant mothers in Uganda.
Studies show that 16 mothers die every day during child birth as a result of complications.
Health workers say Mothers delivering their babies under unhygienic conditions have higher chances of contracting diseases.
Limited resources in many public hospitals may however mean some mothers will miss out on these kits and would have to purchase the items themselves.
The government says its working hard to ensure constant supplies of the kits are kept up.
