Uganda on Sunday reported 66 new confirmed coronavirus cases following testing of samples carried out on Saturday which pushed its nationwide total to 1,500 cases.

The Ministry of Health said that 53 of the new cases were alerts; more than half of the alerts (30) were from the Kampala Metropolitan Area, while 11 were contacts to previously confirmed cases, again, a majority (nine) from Kampala.

Two returnees were also among the new confirmed cases with one each from from Ethiopia, and Oman.

Uganda’s death toll remains at 13 as no fatality was reported while the number of recoveries also remained at 1,142.

Ugandan authorities have expressed concern over the number of COVID-19 cases emerging in the capital, Kampala.

The ministry has launched a rapid assessment survey to determine the extent of the spread of the virus among communities in Kampala, map out the affected areas and implement targeted interventions to prevent further spread of the virus.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, meanwhile, has set up a committee headed by a senior military officer to enforce the precautionary measures across the country.
