Ugandan MPs engage in brawl over gun allegations
Chaos erupted in Uganda’s parliament on Tuesday afternoon following reports that a member had brought a firearm into the chambers.
The speaker then ordered security to conduct a search on those present before proceedings could resume.
Parliament was packed amid expectations that a draft to scrap the upper age limit for presidential aspirants was to be tabled.
Members allied to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) support the abolition of the age limit to allow President Yoweri Museveni run for another mandate in 2021.
The constitutional article in contention, 102 (b), caps the presidential age limit at 75 years. If not abolished, 73-year-old Museveni will be barred from vying in the next vote.
In a video shared on Twitter by local NBS Television, Members are seen to engage in a physical brawl, with one even throwing a chair at his colleagues.
