A Ugandan legislator affiliated to the ruling party is set to spearhead the removal of an age limit from the constitution, to enable long-serving president Yoweri Museveni to run for another term when his current mandate ends.

Ann Maria Nankabirwa, a Member of Parliament on the ruling National Resistance Movement party’s ticket, told Reuters she had recently met with constituents who asked her to start the process of removing the age limit from the constitution.

“These are my constituents telling me,” Reuters reports Nankabirwa to say. “I can’t ignore their voices. They want the age limit removed for Museveni to stand again and I have no choice but to take their petition to the party.”

The Ugandan constitution bars anyone over the age of 75 years from running for the presidency.

Museveni, now 71-years-old, would be ineligible to seek another term in office in the 2021 elections.

Nankabirwa said within a week she would deliver a petition to the National Executive Committee and ask it to begin the procedure for amending the constitution.
