A Ugandan Member of Parliament was on Tuesday fined Ush 40,000 (about US$ 10) for an offence of being a public nuisance, local NTV reports.
Legislator Ibrahim Abiriga of Arua Municipality appeared before the Kampala City Hall Court and was charged with urinating on the Ministry of Finance wall fence.
The prosecution told the court that Abiriga, allied to the ruling National Resistance Movement, had committed the offence on September 25, in the capital, Kampala.
In its argument, it said the MP’s behaviour contravened the Kampala Capital City Authority Maintenance Law and Order Ordinance, 2016.
The MP pleaded guilty, and was ordered to pay the fine or spend two weeks in jail.
He paid the fine and was released thereafter.
While sentencing Abiriga, the magistrate considered his elderly age, and that he was remorseful and saved the court’s time by pleading guilty.
The court also took into consideration Abiriga’s medical forms presented by his lawyer, showing that he is diabetic and therefore cannot control urine for a long time.
Pictures of Abiriga easing himself on the Ministry of Finance’s wall fence had circulated on social media in September, with many Ugandans rebuking him for the act.
