Ugandan entrepreneur reaps big from growing demand for healthy foods

In Uganda, a young entrepreneur is transforming a fruit juice business into a multi-million shilling company.

Sam Turyatunga’s company manufactures banana and mango fruit juices under the Uhuru Fruit Drinks brand.

His products are tapping into the fast growing demand for healthy foods.

At the crack of dawn, Turyatunga is out in the market to shopping for mangoes. It’s a raw material for his product – Uhuru fruit juice. He says the business is fast growing.

A graduate of food science, Turyatunga started his trade in a hostel and later moved to the University lab. He has now grown to the level of a cottage industry.

In just one year Turyatunga has grown his production capacity to 500 liters daily.  His customers include restaurants, supermarkets and schools.

He now faces the challenge of limited technology to meet the increasing demand.

As Turyatunga churns out more flavors on to the market, he is hopeful that one day his product will be among the favorite in the East African Region.
