Uganda tightens foreign adoption rules to thwart child trafficking

Read < 1 minute

There’s been mixed reactions to a new law that restricts foreigners from adopting babies in Uganda. Government says the bill will better regulate the adoption industry – and prevent children from being taken illegally.

Taking care of homeless children is a serious challenge in Uganda. Some foreigners have been adopting babies.

But authorities are concerned that not all of that is above board. Hence the new bill to restrict foreigners from adopting.

The reactions have been mixed, on the one hand – activists say it will make things worse while other activists support the bill.

It’s not clear just how many children have been illegally taken out of the country, but the government says this bill will go a long way to stop what amounts to child trafficking.
