The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has threatened to withdraw the national team from the on-going 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers because of continued financial constraint.
Moses Magogo, the FA president told Xinhua on Monday that the team needs 210,000 U.S. dollars to play Comoros away on Sept. 5.
“We made our request many months ago and we have exhausted the money we had. If we fail to get funding we shall have no option but to withdraw,” said Magogo.
The FA is now looking at government for funding.
Uganda and Burkina Faso are currently top of Group D of the 2017 Afcon qualifiers after starting with 2-0 wins over Botswana and Comoros respectively.
If Uganda decides to withdraw then it stands to pay huge fines and also be banned for close to three years by the Confederation of African Football, the continent’s football governing body.
Head Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic last week named his squad that started training on Sunday.
