Uganda beat two-time champions the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-0 at the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group A opener on Saturday.

Goals in either half from Patrick Kaddu and Emmanuel Okwi gifted the Uganda Cranes all three points to move them top of Group A, ahead of Egypt, on goal difference, after the hosts beat Zimbabwe 1-0 on Friday.

Despite the DR Congo having greater possession throughout the game, Uganda made their chances count with some fine finishing.

Patrick Kaddu broke free to glance in Farouk Miya’s corner after 14 minutes as the Cranes went into halftime ahead.

Emmanuel Okwi looped in a header, again from another Farouk Miya delivery, three minutes into the second half to double Uganda’s advantage.

Uganda continued to threaten thereafter but was unable to add to its lead.

Uganda next plays Zimbabwe on Wednesday at the Cairo International Stadium while the DR Congo play hosts Egypt later on at the same venue.
