Uganda’s Ministry of Health on Wednesday reported 143 new confirmed COVID-19 cases raising the national total to 5,266.
The capital Kampala recorded the highest numbers of the 135 contacts and alerts with a total of 66 (48 percent) followed by Buikwe with 15 and Lira with 14. The remaining seven districts accounted for 40 of the remaining cases or about 30 percent.
Eight Ugandan returnees also tested positive. Half of them were from Oman while the other four came from Ethiopia, India, Senegal and the UK.
At the same time, the ministry reported two more deaths from the disease, in Soroti and Mbale, bringing the death toll to 60.
Over the last few weeks, Uganda has recorded a steady rise in COVID-19 cases prompting authorities to remind the public to adhere to health regulations or else face a reinstatement of strict measures to contain the spread of the pandemic.
On Saturday, the ministry reported a new record daily increase of 326 infections surpassing the previous record of 318 which was reported in August.
The Ugandan government set September 19 as the tentative date for the Presidential Address on the COVID-19 pandemic as the East African nation grapples with rising rates of infections.
