Uganda reiterates support for China’s One country, two systems policy on Hong Kong
Uganda on Friday said it “firmly supports the One country, two systems policy of the People’s Republic of China on the matter of Hong Kong and other areas.”
“Hong Kong is part of China. Hong Kong’s affairs are China’s domestic affairs,” said a statement from the ministry of foreign affairs.
Hong Kong has been dogged by prolonged protests which have mostly turned violent as the demonstrators caused damage indiscriminately, physically attacked law enforcement officers and also disrupted vital services like transport.
Uganda’s ministry of foreign affairs in its statement also condemned foreign interference in the Hong Kong affairs, saying “Hong Kong’s affairs are China’s domestic affairs.”
“As a basic norm on International Relations, the Government of Uganda respects the sovereignty of all countries and objects to any foreign interference into the domestic affairs of other countries,”
The statement comes following an announcement by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Carrie Lam, banning people from wearing masks during public assemblies starting from Saturday.
Entitled “anti-mask law,” the regulation – once in effect – could entail a jail term of up to one year or a fine of 25,000 Hong Kong dollars.
“In the past four months, almost all protesters who carry out vandalism and violence had their faces covered. And the purpose was to hide their identity and evade the law, and they have becoming more and more daring,” Lam said at the press conference, adding that over 1,100 people were injured during more than 400 protests.
