Uganda Police arrest journalists over coverage of opposition protests

Uganda police on Monday arrested journalists for covering protests over the February 18 elections.

Local and foireign journalists were arrested while others fled as they were covering opposition protesters who dropped piglets close to State House Nakasero, one of the official residences of President Yoweri Museveni.

The journalists were detained at Central Police Station in the capital Kampala, and were later released after recording statements.

Others were also arrested while covering events at the residence of opposition leader Kizza Besigye where police are heavily deployed to curtail his movement. They were also later released.

Besigye has been accused of wanting to incite protests against the results of the recent elections in which long-serving leader Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner.

The opposition has rejected the results, saying the voting process was marred by voter intimidation and cases of marked ballot sheets.

Security agencies on Sunday beefed up security in major towns across the country in anticipation of a mass opposition protest where people were to walk to State House.

Museveni has previously warned that those who intend to cause election violence would face the consequences of the law.
