Uganda, Egypt record friendly wins ahead of AFCON tourney
Uganda and Egypt recorded morale-boosting victories on Sunday ahead of the African Cup of Nations tournament that begins on Saturday in Gabon.
The two countries are pooled together alongside Ghana and Mali in Group D.
Uganda emphatically overcame Slovakia 3-1 following a 2-0 defeat to Tunisia and a 1-0 victory over Slovenia in preceding friendlies.
Moses Oloya, Standard Liege youngster Faruku Miya and captain Geofrey Massa netted for the Cranes, while Denis Vavro got the Slovaks’ consolation at the Armed Forces Stadium in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Egypt beat Tunisia 1-0 at the Cairo International Stadium to ensure they go to Gabon full of confidence in their abilities.
Al Ahly’s Marwan Mohsen scored the solitary goal in the second minute of injury time.
Mali went down to Burkina Faso by 2-1, and will be looking to get their confidence back on the right track with a victory against Algeria on Tuesday, ahead of their AFCON opener against Egypt on January 17.
The continental showpiece will kick off on Saturday with hosts Gabon facing Guinea-Bissau.
