Uganda and Tanzania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation and improvement of ports and inland waterways and railway transport services.

The cooperation between the two nations will see Uganda, which is a landlocked country use the port of Dar es Salaam for transporting its cargoes, the Citizen reports.

During the signing of the agreement yesterday, Uganda’s minister for Transport Mr Bagiire Aggrey said that the country deemed Dar es Salaam port as cost effective for transporting its cargoes.

Aggrey hoped the completion of the Standard Gauge Railway project from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza will help lower the cost even further.

The country’s decision is in line with their plans to improve business of Ugandans within and outside the country.

The minister hailed Tanzania for the improvement on the Dar es Salaam port, which provides a good link to other land locked countries.

Tanzania’s minister for works, Transport and Communication Prof Makame Mbarawa on the other hand promised that the country’s government would keep improving the entire transportation sector with a view to attracting more clients fropm neighbouring landlocked countries, the report said.
