U.S. sanctions 19 Russians for alleged interference in 2016 election
The U.S. on Thursday imposed sanctions on 19 Russians, accusing them of interference in the 2016 U.S. election and alleged cyber-attacks.
The sanctioned include 13 individuals who were charged last month by the by Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused the Russians of “destructive cyber-attacks, and intrusions targeting critical infrastructure”.
He said the sanctions would target “ongoing nefarious attacks” by Russia.
The sanctions come just a day after the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the Trump administration “stands in absolute solidarity with U.K.” following a nerve agent attack against a Russian double agent and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury last week.
She made the remarks during a UN Security Council meeting.
A joint statement by the leaders of the U.K , U.S., Germany and France on Wednesday condemned the Salisbury nerve agent attack as “an assault on UK sovereignty.”
