U.N. chief to tour world’s largest refugee camp in Kenyan visit
The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has met with Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta in the capital, Nairobi.
The U.N. chief is on a two-day visit to the East African nation, and is expected to tour the world’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab.
Kenya remains adamant that it will shut down the camp, which currently hosts more than half a million Somali refugees.
The government said Islamists terrorists had infiltrated the camp, and were using it to plan and launch attacks around the country.
Guterres however praised Kenya’s efforts to boost peace and security in the region.
“Kenya is an example of all aspects that can be copied not only on the African continent but also around,” he said.
“[This proves] that in today’s international community there are countries making sure the three pillars of the U.N. – peace and security, sustainable and inclusive development and human rights – can be fully met.”
After holding talks with Uhuru, the U.N. chief held a joint press conference with the president at the country’s State House in Nairobi.
Guterres said the U.N. was ready to support Kenya so it can achieve sustainable development goals.
