Twitter considering increasing character limit from 140 to 10,000

Twitter is considering increasing its character limit from the current 140 to 10,000.

After around 24 hours of speculation, it seems the social media company is considering increasing the current character limit to a new 10,000 allowance, the same as for direct messages.

This is the latest effort by the firm to appeal to a wider audience and open doors for advertisers who could use the extra space to try and sell their products.

Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey has said that he is not definitely set on sticking with the current 140 characters.

He suggested that Twitter was looking at ways to give people more room to express themselves without polluting the service.

Dorsey said that imposing some limits “inspires creativity and brevity and a sense of speed”. He said it would “never lose that feeling”.

Matti Littunen from media research company Enders Analysis noted that the popularity of screenshots of long text messages on the site is proof that people are not using it like they did before.

“The move is a further sign of the company looking to adapt its core product and extend appeal beyond its following of 320m monthly active users,” he added.

Matti also thinks there’s a risk the changes could alienate some current Twitter users who enjoy the punchy direct style of the content on there.
