The death toll for Friday’s attack in the centre of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, has risen to 38 – the AP has reported.

Police on Friday responded to reports of sustained gunfire and a loud explosion near the president’s residence.

According to local sources, a second explosion took place beside an international hotel

The East Africa based armed-group, al-Shabaab, claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Thursday, a day before the attack, the Somali government had issued a “terror warning” in the capital.
