Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur withdraws from U.S. Open

Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur will not play at this year’s U.S. Open due to an injury.

Tournament organizers issued a statement on Thursday confirming Jabeur’s withdrawal.

Jabeur, seeded 17th, will be replaced by Belgian Elise Mertens.

Jabeur has struggled with injuries in recent months, disrupting her season and her quest for a maiden Grand Slam. The 29-year-old skipped the Mubadala Citi DC Open and Washington Open earlier this month because of a shoulder injury. She also missed the Olympic Games in Paris to avoid aggravating a problem with her knee.

Jabeur reached the U.S. Open final in 2022. She lost to Iga Swiatek.

The U.S. Open, the year’s fourth and final Grand Slam, starts on Monday.
