Tunisia’s football federation, the FTF, said it is hopeful that the nation’s top league could resume in August provided the government gives its approval.
All football activities were suspended in Tunisia in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tunisia is one of Africa’s worst-affected countries with a total of 1,032 confirmed cases and 45 deaths as of May 11.
The FTF had initially hoped for the league to restart on June 10 but it was forced to push it forward as the government did not validate its schedule for a return to training.
“The resumption of professional Ligue 1 will take place in August 2020,” a statement from the FTF said.
A statement on the FTF website added that the resumption will be subject to a number of guidelines.
“A certain number of measures will apply which has previously published and which will be sent to the clubs in the form of decisions. They will be published again to remind them,” the statement read in part.
The FTF added that the start of the 2020/2021 season for Professional Ligue 1 will start on October 24 while the 2020/2021 season for the other divisions will start on October 31.
The federation added that Cup matches will be scheduled according to the requirements of the general calendar.
“All the above-mentioned deadlines are always subject to the approval of the state institutions responsible for defining the general policy for the fight against the coronavirus in accordance with the requirements of the health and epidemiological situation.”
The FTF maintained that its top priority was the protection of players and it prioritised their health before anything else.
