Tunisian Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh has submitted his resignation to President Kais Saied, the presidency said Wednesday.
Fakhfakh submitted his resignation after an earlier meeting among him, the president of the parliament and the secretary general of the Tunisian General Labor Union, according to a presidency statement.
Saied should start consultations for the appointment of the new head of government.
A few days ago, the Islamist party Ennahda (Renaissance), the majority party in parliament, decided to break with the government of Fakhfakh.
Ennahda, with 54 parliamentary seats, recently voiced its intention to demand the departure of Fakhfakh’s government, citing “suspicion of conflict of interests and abuse of power of Fakhfakh.”
Fakhfakh was appointed head of government on Jan. 20, 10 days after Habib Jemli, the previous prime minister-designate, had failed to gain the confidence of parliament.
On Feb. 27, the government of Fakhfakh gained the confidence of parliament.
