A Tunisian soldier has opened fire on colleagues at a military base in the capital Tunis, killing seven and wounding 10 more before being shot dead, according to Tunisian authorities.

The defence ministry has described the incident as ‘an isolated act, and not a terrorist one.’ Tensions in the city remain high after an attack on the National Bardo Museum in March, in which 22 people were killed  – most of them tourists.

The barracks is about a kilometre from the museum.

The guardian reported that the soldier attacked one man with a knife and took his gun before shooting at his comrades who were saluting the flag.

The soldier in question had a family and a was suffering from psychological problems. Because of his situation he had been forbidden from carrying arms and at work he was given non-sensitive duties. Defence ministry spokesman Belhassen Oueslati, called the shooting an isolated incident.
