Tunisia has reaffirmed its support for the legitimate right of the Palestinians to recover their occupied territory and to build an independent sovereign state with Jerusalem as the capital, according to a statement released on Friday by the Tunisian Foreign Ministry.

Tunisia continues to pursue regional and international efforts aimed at the resumption of a concrete peace process capable of ending the suffering of the Palestinian people and allowing them to restore their rights, the statement said.

“Our country continues to denounce the aggression of the Israeli occupation, as well as the policy of colonization of the Palestinian territories,” read the statement.

The statement comes following a round of fighting between Israel and Gaza this week, that killed dozens of Palestinians.

Israel targeted Hamas in strikes on Gaza early Saturday after rockets were fired towards it from the Palestinian enclave, the army said, two days after a fragile ceasefire began.

Hamas, the Islamist movement that has de facto control over the Gaza Strip, has so far kept its distance from the deadly exchanges of fire that erupted.
