U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he had held “a very good telephone conversation with President Xi of China” ahead of the G20 Summit scheduled to take place in Japan next week.

In a tweet sent out through his official account, President Trump said teams from China and the U.S. would meet before the meeting to begin crucial talks.

The 2019 Group of 20 Summit will take place in Osaka on 28–29 June. This will be the fourteenth meeting of the G20, and the first that is held in Japan.

Prior to that meeting, the U.K. expressed hope that the trade friction between China and the US will be ironed out.

“Britain is a very open, trading economy. We are very vulnerable to anything that impacts on global trade and global economic growth, so we very much hope for an early solution to the tensions between the U.S. and China,” U.K. finance minister Philip Hammond said.

Japan on the other hand said it was looking forward to hosting Chinese President Xi during the conference, noting strong ties between the two sides.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said last week that he was expecting to meet President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

He said he welcomes President Xi to attend the upcoming G20 Osaka summit to jointly promote its success and is ready to work with Xi to jointly promote China-Japan relations.
