A head-on collision between a truck and a transport minibus in Ethiopia’s Amhara regional state located in the northern part of the country has killed eight people, local police officials said on Sunday.
The accident happened in Angolela-Tera locality, North Shoa Zone of Amhara regional state on Saturday evening.
Fifteen other people sustained injuries from the incident, state affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported, quoting Nigussie Moges, who heads the Angolela-Tera locality police department.
They are currently undertaking medical treatments in nearby healthcare facilities, according to Moges.
“Police have already arrested the driver of the truck pending a completion of investigation into the cause of the accident,” said Moges.
The deadly accident came on the backdrop of another deadly car accident on Friday that left six people dead after an auto-rickshaw vehicle collided with a transport minibus. The accident occurred in Ethiopia’s Oromia regional state located in the central part of the country.
Although Ethiopia has one of the lowest per capita car ownership rates in the world, deadly traffic accidents are fairly common, with the blame put on bad roads, reckless driving, a flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of safety rules.
